Revolver work

We have seen quite a few revolvers come in over the last few weeks, some for repair, some for upgrades and some for changes.

The UK laws are very clear regarding such firearms, if they are cartridge firing such as the .357Mag or .44 they must be not less than 24″ in length with a minimum barrel length of 12″ and this is always something I check. OK, there are references to a metric alternative, so 300,0mm barrel and 600,0mm minimum overall length however I always work to the imperial dimensions and have a piece of wood marked off at the relevant distances, if the LBR (Long Barrelled Revolver) fails to hit the marks it is measured more carefully with a long vernier calliper.  Last month I saw one LBR that was significantly shorter than 24″ despite having a legal length barrel which had been recently fitted. I have to assume the person doing the work could not be bothered to check such a trivial thing such as overall length before fitting the new barrel.

Muzzle loading revolvers have no such restrictions in this country so you can in theory own a Model 1873 .44 with a barrel cut back to 4″ or less if you enjoy such things and I am always happy to advise customers on such modifications however be warned, if I feel a proposed modification to any type of revolver is either poorly thought out or unlawful I will either seek an workable alternative or decline the work.

Here is something a bit different, a Buntline with an obvious modification which you may or may not be able to spot 🙂

On the revolver spares front we are currently manufacturing a small range of normally unavailable spares for Taurus and Rogers & Spencer revolvers in stainless and blued steel and I will post some images at some point once they are ready. I am also working on some parts for the GSG 1911 LBP  and once tested they will be added to the web shop and no doubt I will add some pictures along the way.

EDIT – I just spotted this image so thought I would add it, a Taurus with a new sticky out bit/counter balance or whatever you prefer to call it. The original brace was loose causing it to rattle plus it was very easy to deform albeit inadvertantly. I removed the barrel to re-machine the forcing cone and add a decent crown and whilst it was apart removed the brace, added this one and firmly attached it with the trusty TIG welder so no chance of it coming apart again.

OK, this leads onto the question regarding the legality of removing/replacing the brace or counterweight on an LBR and does this render the LBR section 5 and therefore strictly the domain of the S5 RFD only. Good questions and something I have raised with Police Firearms departments across two counties (Twice with my now local team) They have always come back with the same practical answer,  the work undertaken is a repair or replacement and as such does not constitute conversion to a Section 5 firearm at any point. I hedge my bets by removing the barrel first and ensuring I complete the job same day. Now no doubt some will throw up their arms in horror at such a statement however it is what it is and let’s face it, if an S1/S2 RFD wanted to do something illegal regarding a firearm he would do it in a far more extreme manner. Personally my view is if the brace on a  Taurus was of a reasonable construction I would not have to do this in the first place.
